The tempo builds and peaks with a perfectly repetitive sequence. Impossible to not move while this one is playing.

“It gets cold like winter time,” and this is the soundtrack.

41. Slow Down - Maverick Sabre ft. Jorja Smith

Maverick Sabre and Jorja Smith invented this time machine to help you escape to a more soulful era.

40. Ford Cardinal - Halima

An upbeat ode to memories and mementos.

39. ALIENS - The Griswolds ft. Transviolet

Every time I hear ALIENS, I think “Damn, I wish I knew how to dance competently.”

38. No Brainer - Hodgy

Hodgy says a lot of things, and says them in a very cool way.

37. Risk - Barny Fletcher

The prototype for songs that get me hype. I just want to be a part of a crowd yelling this chorus.

36. Rapture - David Wolves

Basically a dark, psychological thriller in music form. Like the “Metalhead” episode of Black Mirror with the crazy robot dogs.

35. BMO - Ari Lennox

Peak Mattress Music.

34. Better - Ama Lou

An unapologetic message to the critics and doubters. Ama Lou is back and somehow even better.

33. Patagonia - Jelani Aryeh

A hauntingly beautiful afternoon dream.

32. Sharpest Edges - Gallant

Gallant is my favorite R&B singer and his vocals are otherworldly, no more so than on Sharpest Edges.

31. Joke Ting - Goldlink ft. Ari PenSmith

The definition of smooth. Flexes and boasts delivered with velvety vocals and a silky rhythm.

30. Drip - Marc E. Bassy

“I be going off the pill, call me Perc-ules.”

29. Summa - Peach Tree Rascals

A vacation to sunnier days and fewer worries.

28. Phone Numbers - Dominic Fike ft. Kenny Beats

I could listen to Dominic Fike drag out the “O” in phone numbers all day.

27. APOLOGIZE - Baby Keem

My favorite track to run / work out to this year. All energy from Baby Keem.

26. In My Room - Frank Ocean

Never met a Frank Ocean record I didn’t love.

25. Song 32 - Noname

The trippiest collab in the milky way and easily the coolest rice reference in music.

23. Erase - Cautious Clay

The type of sound that consumes the entire space it’s in.

22. Stella - Badgirl$

Let’s start a riot.

21. Memoirs of the Melancholy - BLESSED

A complex and anthemic look at hurt. 

20. Find an Island - BENEE

BENEE is my favorite breakout artist of the year. Every song she released slaps and this is my personal favorite.

19. Scottie Pippen - Bren Joy

Can’t get over the way Bren Joy croons, “6 rings on my fingers”

18. 10% - KAYTRANADA ft. Kali Uchis

KAYTRANADA production unique and awesome, perfectly complemented by Kali Uchis on the vocals. *chef’s kiss*

17. Up, Up, and Away - Erik Cain

This song makes me so damn HAPPY.

16. Warm Animal - Sure Sure

An innocent and optimistic love story.

15. GONE, GONE / THANK YOU - Tyler, The Creator

I’m a sucker for a song with a total tonal shift.

14. Petrol Bliss - Choker

Sensationally hazy. Like stumbling through a heavy, early morning fog.

13. RICKY - Denzel Curry

A parenting guide with the aggression of Russell Westbrook attacking the rim.

12. No Advice - Skizzy Mars

Skizzy Mars is my favorite rapper. No time for advice.

11. On My Own - Jaden ft. Kid Cudi

I think I’ve finally aged into loving Kid Cudi’s new music, but his classic hums on this one really took me back. Jaden is a star.

The most inspiring love story. Hands down.

09. Tokyo Drifting - Glass Animals ft. Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry with the feature of the year.

08. Count On You - Love Mansuy

This song is like staying up through the night, and talking about the future with a significant other.

07. Good Company - Mahalia ft. Terrace Martin

Mahalia setting boundaries and communicating expectations, it’s a beautiful thing.

06. Trina - Smino

Smino is the closest rapper to unseating Skizzy Mars as my favorite, and this song is a significant reason why.

05. Morning Glory - Kehlani

The embodiment of authenticity and self respect. Love to see it.

04. Hunnids - Innanet James

This whole track flows like a perfectly constructed run-on sentence and Innanet James glides across the beat like Clyde Drexler.

03. Your Best Friend Is A Hater - Emotional Oranges

Sometimes all you need is a best friend who’s a hater.

02. Skiz Again - Skizzy Mars

An honest, introspective, relatable look at growth and grace.

01. Comb My Hair - Pretty Boy Aaron ft. Bruhnice & Tesia

As close to flawless as music gets in my opinion. Smooth, simple and endlessly soulful. Singing this one well into 2020 no doubt.
